Escapes from Behind the Iron Curtain

If you have not lived in a police state, you can not even imagine how horrible it is.
If you are born into it, you grow up conditioned to think it is natural not to be self-reliant,
not to have self-confidence, not to feel important. Freedom? Oh yes, you keep hearing the
word but its real meaning is unknown to you. Just imagine being born in a room with only two
colors anywhere inside of it... and you are never allowed to leave that room or even have a
glance outside. You know there are other colors but have no idea of what they look like because
you have never seen them. Your mind is craving to know but THEY forcefully keep you behind the
"iron curtain".

THEY, the all powerful rulers, have killed, exiled or corrupted those who became their subjects
(slaves) after the takeover. The ones unwilling to surrender their souls and minds had been taken
to Siberian concentration camps. You are alone. Everyone around you has succumbed to lies. You
feel totally helpless and totally hopeless. Fear is a natural part of your life. You know that
questioning even your most basic rights is out of the question. In fact, it may not even occur to
you that not having the permission to travel to a neighboring country is unnatural.

You know there are two kinds of passports: the red ones that are good only within the Soviet
bloc, and the blue ones that would enable you to cross the Iron Curtain. You also know that you
would have to go to the police station to apply. Let's say you gather enough courage to plan a
visit to the police station. Let's say the armed guard (in that hated and feared greyish blue uniform)
lets you inside the building "normal" citizens are happy not to see even from the outside.
What do you think happens to you once you are in? Let me just give you a mild case scenario:
a petty officer will first laugh at your request, then he will tell you the quota for the year is full. If
you dare to express dissatisfaction, he might ask you whether you would be happier locked up for
a while, or he might simply kick you out. And do not even think about mentioning the words "human
rights" because that could get you in serious trouble for a long time.

Do you know what a real nightmare is? Even ten years after you started
your new life as a free man in a free country, you keep dreaming that you are serving your
military time in that hellish labor camp, and every time you wake up in your cold sweat it takes
a while to adjust to reality, it takes a while to believe that all that is actually behind you now.

Borders... Not only the barbed wire in that mined strip of land that stops you from entering
Austria. It is also in your mind... where it is much bigger than any physical barrier. It is the fear of
being caught even thinking about freedom.

I dedicate this book to all of you who helped me during my quest to find a way out of hopelessness,
to find a way to a better life in the free part of the world, and to all those who had been patient with
me during the years as I struggled to free my mind from the conditioning forced upon my generation
in communist Hungary after the 1956 revolution.

Like the “good Samaritan” I encountered in the Trieste harbor after my first escape in August of 1973,
some of you may have been real Angels. Miraculously, you came just when I needed you, and did
exactly what needed to be done so that I could move on with my life.

Reign of the Chroms

Far away from their home world, a young couple of a highly advanced civilization escape the broken mother ship in a space shuttle, hoping to find a livable planet. They encounter a humanoid species living in their stone age. Using Wrix, the holorobot, they introduce modern technology on the planet. When Wrix is given too much freedom to speed up evolution of the inhabitants, he begins to act like a god. The end result is destruction of the ecosystem.

Is there perhaps a Wrix on planet Earth as well?

At some point on the endless scale of time,
somewhere in the frozen emptiness,
next to a ball of fire,
on a spinning sphere of rock,
some creatures with their three pounds
of jelly-like substance in their skulls
try to make sense of this incomprehensible
'nonsense'.

And by the time the freeze of the Universe extinguishes
the fireball - in an instant, compared to infinity -,
the creatures disappear from the planet
as if they never existed.
Or?
